Central Department of Linguistics (CDL) was set up as a teaching cum research department in 1997. The main goal of the department is to produce high level manpower for teaching linguistics and doing research in the languages of Nepal. This department offers two year Master’s Degree (semester-based) in Linguistics and conducts PhD in collaboration  with the Dean’s office of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, T.U. It has completed Baram Documentation, Puma and Chhintang Documentation and Bhasa Sanchar Project successfully.

With the aegis of National Planning Commission (NPC), Government of Nepal, Central Department of Linguistics  conducted the linguistic surveys of Nepal since 2009. This survey  completed the sociolinguistic survey of more than 96 languages of Nepal. Full reports of sociolinguistic survey  are available in cdltu.edu.np.

This department comprises the faculties from different disciplines of linguistics, viz., computational linguistics, linguistic typology, corpus linguistics, language documentation,  Tibeto-Burman linguistics and others. It  is headed by Prof. Dr. Dan Raj Regmi.

The student holding a Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline from Tribhuvan University (TU) or any other universities recognized by TU are eligible for MA in Linguistics (semester based)
